Cinematic Spaces: Drawn Thumbnails 28-33

These are my set of thumbnails for the final excerpt in King Solomon's Mines. Here, the characters come across a rom with a secret stone entrance, which rises into the ceiling as the witch-like guide triggers a secret lever. In this room, are three large stone chests of treasure. A lot of action happens in this scene, such as one of the characters being crushed under the secret entrance as it closes, and the characters are unable to escape. I wanted to capture the aftermath of the actions taken in this part of the book.

"...and, standing in a bloody ooze, began to feel up and down the door and the sides of the passage. But no knob or spring could we discover."

I wanted to include the blood on the floor, to give more of a more ominous feel about the room, since this area is known in the book as 'The Place of Death'.

For this image, I think I should use a lot of shadows, with just a small light source, as described towards the end of this excerpt.

I had a little bit of trouble trying to come up with images here, as I found there was more action than description in this particular part.

Cinematic Spaces: Developed Thumbnail

Heres a developed version of the thumbnail below, done in photoshop. I chose this image to work on, as I found this particular angle to work well, and shows the statues size. I've widened the canvas and moved the foot to the right, and ive painted in some sketchy mountains and tried to include statues in the distance. Id like to work on this image further, but for now id like to try to develop a few more thumbnails through photoshop. It also gives me a chance to practice digital painting outside the friday lessons.

Life Drawing - Week 2

Here are the drawings i did for our second week of life drawing, on 02/10/12. 

This session was about drawing the negative space around the model.

I found this lesson quite interesting, as it was good to be able to draw the shapes and, if something is drawn out of proportion, it's not noticeable at all and just becomes another part of one big new shape.

I like the outlined look that emerges whilst doing these drawings. (unfortunately the pictures are very poor quality and the camera can barely pick up the pencil lines - which I prefer using than charcoal)

Cinematic Spaces: Drawn Thumbnails 10 - 26

Here are thumbnails 10 - 18, and 19 - 26. In set 11-18 I have still focused on the 'Silent Ones' scene. I have tried to follow Phil's advise in going for a subjective point of view to make the statues look much more colossal than in my previous images. 

My creative partners have given positive feedback on thumbnail 9 from my previous post (below) so i will go back and work on some similar compositions, and try to develop that a bit more.

thumbnails 19-22 are still playing with perspective and trying to find a good composition which will showcase the size of the statues. 

In thumbnails 23-26, i have begun doing some quick sketches for the second main scene in the exerpt; The characters have gone through the entrance behind the statues, and have come across a large cathedral like building, 'designed by nature'. I dont think i will make to many more thumbnails for this part, as there are more visually interesting scenes that are in the extract, but i wanted to make some up 

anyway as the cathedral idea is still quite interesting.

Cinematic Spaces: Information on my Excerpt

King Solomon's Mines

I Haven't given an introduction to my story yet, so i'll talk about it on this post.

From reading my extract, I have learnt that the story involves 4 characters, who are accompanied by an old witch-like guide, are travelling in search of the legendary King Solomon's Mines.

In the first part of the excerpt,  the party of 4 enter a large cave in-between 3 large mountain peaks. In my thumbnails so far, the characters see 3 large shapes/figures in the distance. when they come closer, they find that they are in fact enormous statues, guarding the entrance to a large cave entrance, behind them. They are described by one of the characters as 3 ancient gods: Astarte, Chemosh, and Milcom. 

 I have watched the 1937 film, for some inspiration and to get a better understanding for the story.  unfortunately, when it came to this scene in particular, the films interpretation of the statues were not as grand and colossal as described in the book. Although i did get a better understanding of how the 

surrounding rock might look.

Here are my first set of quick thumbnails based off of the King Solomon's Mines.  

most of these thumbnails are based off of a particular scene in which the characters approach 3 'colossal statues' named The Silent Ones. 

In the book, the statues are compared to 3 gods; Astarte, Chemosh and Milcom. I am currently doing some research into these gods to get a better understanding of how they might look.

The book i am using for the project is 'King Solomon's Mines'. This is my first influence map, i've put down so far some images that immediately came to mind when reading the first few paragraphs of the extract.
